Description

Simanim Science Lab: Crunchy Codes for a Sweet Year — Tali turns the studio into a “taste lab,” Noam brings the science, and Lama the Llama (לָמָה) asks the big question: לָמָה אֲנַחְנוּ אוֹכְלִים סִימָנִים בְּרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה? Why do we eat simanim on Rosh Hashanah? We “taste with our ears” using kid-safe foley—apple crunch, honey sticky-rub, רִמּוֹן seed plink, and סֶלֶק squish—to learn how סִימָנִים (symbols) point to kind actions and דִּבְרֵי נֹעַם (sweet words). We explore different מִנְהָגִים (customs), talk about כַּוָּנָה (intent), play “Two Nu’s & a WOW!”, and try an at-home Foley Fruit Plate activity. Kids will: Discover what סִימָנִים are and why families use them. Hear sound-alike substitutes for תַּפּוּחַ בִּדְּבַשׁ, רִמּוֹן, סֶלֶק, and תַּמְרִים. Practice “sweet speech” they can use right away.

Simanim Science Lab: Crunchy Codes for a Sweet Year

Tali turns the studio into a kid-safe “taste lab” where we hear our סִימָנִים instead of eating them. Noam explains how symbols point to actions, and Lama (לָמָה) asks the big question: לָמָה אֲנַחְנוּ אוֹכְלִים סִימָנִים בְּרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה? Together we explore classic foods—תַּפּוּחַ בִּדְּבַשׁ, רִמּוֹן, סֶלֶק, תַּמְרִים—and practice דִּבְרֵי נֹעַם (sweet words) for a sweet start.

What kids will learn

  • What are סִימָנִים? Food-symbols families use on רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה.
  • Symbols → actions: We choose kind words and helpful behaviors.
  • מִנְהָגִים differ: Customs vary by family—show כָּבוֹד (respect).
  • כַּוָּנָה matters: Aim your heart and voice toward good.

Mini glossary (Hebrew → quick gloss)

  • סִימָן / סִימָנִים — sign/symbol (special foods for hopes)
  • רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה — Jewish New Year
  • כַּוָּנָה — focused intention
  • דִּבְרֵי נֹעַם — pleasant/kind words
  • מִנְהָגִים — customs
  • Foods: תַּפּוּחַ בִּדְּבַשׁ (apple in honey), רִמּוֹן (pomegranate), סֶלֶק (beet), תַּמְרִים (dates)

Outline

  • Cold-open: Simanim Science Lab setup
  • Big Question: לָמָה do we use סִימָנִים?
  • Big Idea A: What סִימָנִים are; symbols → actions
  • Big Idea B: Different מִנְהָגִים, same sweet goals
  • Big Idea C: “Sweet words” matter as much as sweet foods
  • Game: Two Nu’s & a WOW!
  • Make/Do: Foley Fruit Plate activity
  • Values wrap & goodbye

Play-at-home game: Two Nu’s & a WOW!

Use CRUNCH (A), PLINK (B), SQUISH (C) sounds to answer.

  1. Real סִימָן for a sweet year? → B: תַּפּוּחַ בִּדְּבַשׁ
  2. What do סִימָנִים teach? → B: Symbols remind us to speak and act kindly
  3. How treat different מִנְהָגִים? → C: Respect and learn—שְׁאֲלוּ רַב/הוֹרֶה

Chants to try:

  • “סִימָן מַזְכִּיר—מַעֲשֶׂה מַמְתִּיק!”
  • “כָּבוֹד לְכָל מִנְהָג!”

Make/Do: Foley Fruit Plate (no eating, just sounds)

Materials: small bowl + dry rice/beans (רִמּוֹן plink), damp sponge (סֶלֶק squish), safe lotion/soap (דְּבַשׁ sticky-rub), crisp paper/veggie stick (תַּפּוּחַ crunch), napkin (flutter). Steps:

  1. Make big picture labels for each station.
  2. Practice sounds: crunch / plink / squish / sticky-rub / flutter.
  3. After each sound, say one sweet sentence (e.g., “סְלִיחָה,” “תּוֹדָה,” “בְּבַקָּשָׁה”).
  4. Create a sound pattern and perform your family’s “Simanim song.”
  5. Optional: Record sounds only (no faces) for grandparents.

Safety: Adult nearby; tiny items stay on the table; keep volume gentle. Food allergies? Use paper props only.

Family conversation starters

  • Which סִימָן feels most meaningful to you, and why?
  • What’s one דִּבְרֵי נֹעַם sentence we can say at dinner tonight?
  • What are our family’s מִנְהָגִים? What do grandparents do?
  • Where can we use כַּוָּנָה to make our words sweeter this week?

Sources & notes (for grown-ups)

  • הוֹרָיוֹת י״ב א / כְּרִיתוֹת ה׳ ב — Talmudic list of symbolic foods.
  • שֻׁלְחָן עָרוּךְ או״ח תקפ״ג:א — Custom to eat symbolic foods (with brief yehi ratzon lines).
  • מִשְׁלֵי ט״ז:כ״ד — “דְּבַשׁ נֹפֶת אִמְרֵי־נֹעַם” (pleasant words like honey). We present סִימָנִים as מִנְהָגִים (customs), not requirements; consult your רַב/הוֹרֶה for your family’s practice.
